Ammon's Birth-day

***Disclaimer: This post is strictly for journaling purposes***
On May 8th, 2005, my mom's birthday & also Mother's day, I thought I was going to have a baby! My first little baby boy...WOW! What was I going to do with a boy!
It was about 5 in the evening and my contractions were about 3-5 minutes apart and getting stronger so we called my sister, Heather, and asked if we could drop off the girls because we thought it was 'time'. So we got everyone packed up and headed to Star from Caldwell...it was about a 20 minutes long is all. In that 20 minutes my contractions went from about 3-5 minutes to about 8 minutes apart. Bummer! But as soon as I got out of the car they picked right back up so I gave the on-call doctor a call and was told to time them for another hour and if they were still close to head into the hospital to get checked.
So Jeremy & I took a walk around the neighborhood & sure enough, they picked up so we left the girls and headed to the hospital! And guess what!!! Those stinkin' contractions slowed down again! ARG!! I was so bummed but we went in anyway...maybe those contractions had done just enough to check me in & start me up! So we go in and I get hooked up to monitors and there are some good contractions going on and I'm dilated to a 5 but the doctor didn't think the contractions were close enough to let me stay so I got sent home...BUMMER!
We picked up the girls from Heather's and headed home to a mostly sleepless night with contractions & a protruding belly & all that! I was so not wanting to be pregnant anymore!
The next morning, Monday, Jeremy took the day off from teaching. He had planned on getting caught up on some landscaping stuff but it was rainy & it's hard to work outside in the rain so he thought it was a great day to have a baby! He called up the doctors office, talked to a nurse and explained his situation...he had the day off and I was dilated to a 5 and only 1 week from my due date...so asked if there was anyway we could have a baby that day. The nurse said she would call him back. She called back very quickly actually...I was surprised!! She said Dr. K was up for inducing that day but the hospital was full...when am mom goes home they'd call and let us know when to come in...I was in shock!!
So we call Heather again and give her the story, pack everyone up again and head over there. Just as we walked into her house my cell phone rang...it was the nurse! The hospital was ready & expecting us at 1:00. WOW!!! It was just after noon! Everything was going so fast!
So we said bye to the girls and headed to the hospital! I got checked in and hooked up to IV's and checked to see how I was dilating & this time I was at a 4. Hmm...weird...I was at a 5 last night...oh well. So the doctor came in at 1:50 and broke my water and we were off!
The water was green...he pooped...the nurse explained that wasn't a big deal yet, it just meant that when he was born he wouldn't be put on my chest. He would instead be whisked to the warming table & checked for complications from swallowing meconium. While she was telling me all this I all the sudden felt very light headed & cold. I asked the nurse about it & she said I was as white as the sheets! She made me lay down flat for a couple minutes & breath some oxygen. After a few minutes I was feeling better so I got to get up and walk. The contractions got hard pretty quick. After about and hour or so I was checked again and was only at a 5! I asked if I could get in the bath then.
I just LOVE the jetted tub when I'm in labor! It felt so good. I would have the jets blow on my back in between contractions & then during contractions Jeremy would push on my back...it was nice. After I was in the bath for maybe 45 minutes I was starting to feel alot of pressure and asked Jeremy to go get the nurse then all of a sudden I felt a lot of pressure so we pulled the emergency cord thing for a nurse to come. When she came in we told her what was going on and she said she wanted to check me again. So I tried to get out of the tub but when I stood up I had a big contraction and couldn't move. We waited through that & tried again but then I got another big one and the same happened...so she checked me then...I was at a 7 and the head was right there! She said we needed to get me to my bed so she ran & got a wheelchair. While she was gone I got another HUGE contraction and swore I thought my baby was going to fall out!!! So I ripped on the cord and she came running down the hall with the wheelchair yelling for another nurse to call the doctor and tell him it was time. She told me to not push during the contractions as she was pushing me down the hall to my room. In between contractions her & Jeremy lift me up onto the bed & get ready to push. They take the bed apart while I pant through contractions and the nurse yells for the doctor and also yells at me that she has never had to catch a baby and she doesn't want me to break her streak! So I'm panting & screaming & then FINALLY the on-call doctor comes in because my doctors was at a different hospital delivering another baby. She gets her gloves on just in time to turn around and catch Ammon as he fell out of me. Not one push from me...I always joke that he birthed himself! Anyway, they take him to the warmer while I'm getting finished up and he is perfect! No problems of any kind except that he came out so fast his lungs didn't get pressurized...or something like that...so he grunted for the next 5 hours or so while his lungs got used to the air.

That is an amazing story. I know that I have heard it all before but it was so cool reading it. I have to admit after I read that you were in the tub, for the rest of the story I kept thinking about you not wearing anything. Did they cover you up or leave you naked. Oh my heck it is going to bug me until I find out!

Oh My what a story..... My labors were sooooooo long. things have really changed though, I remember when my water broke with my second one, I just waited for the contractions to get going and when I thought they were close enough I went to the hospital and as severely scolded because I hadn't come in "immediately"... It's hard to think of sitting in a bath after the water is broken.... I know some mothers actually deliver in a tub, but that was way after my time of being pregnant. Your story is wonderful and I know your documentation of this and probably of your other births will be appreciated years from now when the kids are older and want to know what your day was like then. So this is definitely a HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to you!!!!
