Fire! Fire!

So we had a fire in our kitchen in June. Jer was making some finger steaks and got the oil too hot & it just burst into flames. It was crazy & we are so lucky more damage wasn't done. The aftermath has been a major process which we are still in almost 2 months later. It's crazy how far the smoke & ash traveled when the fire was relatively small & short lived. Here are a few pics of the damage.

The pan was on the back right burner when it started. Jer tried to throw a little soda on it but it didn't work...we found out that soda in small doses is actually flammable! So if you have a fire use ALOT!!! Which is what we ended up doing. I was downstairs and when I came up he didn't know what else to do except NOT put water on it. So he grabbed the pan with a hot pad and tried to run it outside. He only got to where the burn spot on the floor is before the heat got through the hot pad & he had to put it down. That's where I came in & the flames were almost as high as me. He dumped a whole box of soda on it & that was it.
The pan after the soda & the smoke was gone. It was still hot when we took it out because it was smoking pretty badly so we burned the grass.
The back splash and ceiling
The floor after we cleaned up the splattered oil & soda. The orange spots are where the hot oil was.

We've had the walls washed, the carpets & furniture cleaned and the ducts vacuumed out. Jer is now in the process of replacing the floor then I think we will be done.
The kids were all in the kitchen while Jer & I were trying to get the fire and every time Ryan sees fire now he freaks out a little. It breaks my heart. For a couple days afterwards he would walk around saying "Daddy made fire, it was scary and I cried" Then he wouldn't walk near the burnt mark on the floor and would say something about fire starting again.

That is crazy! I can never find the baking soda when I am just baking, let alone if there was a fire! What are you replacing the floor with?

Okay... now I don't feel so bad about having the BBQ catch on fire and cracking a window from the heat! I am glad that no one was hurt! :-)

I am so glad it wasn't any worse!! I am sure you were plenty scared/nervous. I have always had a fear of house fires, if that had been in my kitchen I think I would not sleep for months! I'm glad none of you were hurt.
